MEET : Lime Garden
The lovely Limes that flourished over lockdown.
The Brighton music scene has been having a ‘moment’ for quite a while now and I think it’s safe to say this ‘moment’ is here to stay. Whatever Brighton is bubbling and boiling away, we want some of it
Our latest obsession to come out of B-town’s creative hub is Lime Garden (FKA LIME); Chloe Howard (vocals/guitar), Leila Deeley (guitar), Tippi Morgan (bass) and Annabel Whittle (drums). With only three singles to their name, the quartet have built up a cult-like fanbase (all in one giant WhatsApp group) and were recently signed to So Young’s record label. Their latest track, Sick & Tired is a signof-the-times-lockdown-anthem and focuses on stagnation and being stuck in a rut, a feeling we can relate to all too well... Whilst being pretty melancholic through its lyrics, the erratic rhythms prove it to be a danceable, somehow uplifting song and leaves us begging for more foot-tappers from them band.
We love everything that they’ve put out so far and can’t wait to see how Lime Garden continues to flourish and grow (zesty and juicy hopefully). Don’t just take our word for it, go and see them in their glory! Not only do they have a run of shows & festival performances but they’re also supporting our favourites Katy J Pearson & Junodream. Stay up to date with all things LG here.
“One of the most exciting bands to come through BBC introducing” – Lauren Laverne (6music)
We caught up with Lime Garden to discuss which albums got them through lockdown and found out their runner-up band names…
How are you all feeling today? How is it in Brighton at the moment?
Annabel: The sun is out, and we are ready for the beach, baby.
Tippi: Feeling relaxed and ready to jump in the sea.
Leila: Fresh n sweaty at the same time.
Did you find lockdown a stifling time for your creativity or did it help ideas come to you? It seems that it either went one way or the other with everyone…
A: I think lockdown was the best thing for us as a band- it gave us so much time to help find our sound.
T: It gave us a creative challenge and time to rest.
L: Yes it completely switched up our songwriting process for the better and I’m really proud of what we made over that period.
You used to be Lime and now are Lime Garden, what were the runner up names?
A: hotmale was a strong contender, but the google searches would have been a bit dodgy…
T: Very glad we didn’t go with Fig lol.
You’ve just signed to So Young Records, congratulations! How did you celebrate?
A: Thanks! Unfortunately we were all horrifically ill with covid at the time, so we were sitting in bed sipping a glass of champagne…
You’ve also had a marvellous amount of success off the back of only three songs. How do you measure success?
A: Hmmm, tricky question. We try not to think too much about streams but when all of our music has been released throughout covid, all the success we can see is virtual. It's quite surreal having not played a proper show since releasing music...
You’ve got a run of Katy J Pearson and Junodream shows coming up, what are your favourite songs by both of them?
A: Hey You- Katy J Peason
T: Tonight or Fix Me Up!
L: Nobody Wants You - Junodream and Hey You - KJP :)
If you could support anyone on tour who would it be?
A: Metronomy
T: Talking Heads
L: The Voidz
Which albums/artists got you through lockdown?
T: The whole King Gizzard discography entertained me through both lockdowns.
A: 925- Sorry, got me through the first lockdown
L: Loving’s - ‘If I Am Only My Thoughts’ album chilled my boots throughout the chaos.
What's next for LIME GARDEN?
T: More bangers and more gigs ;)
And finally... What do you listen to on the Last Bus home?
T: Bit depressing but Convention by Julia Jacklin.
A: AM.AM. by Damien Jurando
L: The Archer - Alexandra Savior
