Sorry @ The Jazz Café 21.06.22
Rounding off their UK tour, Sorry took to a sold out Jazz Café last Tuesday night, with support from the equally incredible Wunderhorse.
Sorry are Asha (lead vox/guitar), Louis (vox/lead guitar), Campbell (bass/sax), Marco (synths) & Lincoln (drums). Together on stage, the 5-piece are not showy in the least – they’re completely unassuming but totally engaging. Listening to their debut album 925 for the first time, it was it’s darkness and grit that really grabbed us. It’s this element of the show that leveled up from studio to stage – each member’s contributions are so key in creating the seriously layered and dramatic live music that entranced the audience – from the sampling to the brief appearance of the sax for that gnarly riff in ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Star.’
The roughly hour long set combined a mix of songs new and old – clear fan favourites from 925 like ‘Lies (Refix)’ and ‘Starstruck’ – had the audience audibly singing along all the way up to the sit-down diners (of which there were actually a few). Playing the album pretty much through, the band also threw in some hints towards their upcoming release. In the same vein as their latest single ‘There’s So Many People That Want To Be Loved',’ these newer tracks further demonstrate another side to Sorry’s sound – an embrace of the tender and vulnerable. This made for a balance of bops like ‘Cigarette Packet’ complemented by softer tunes (‘Heather’ being our favourite) that altogether flew by. Ultimately, the gig signaled a triumphant finale for Sorry on home turf. Going by the fact that people booed when there was no encore, it seems a lot of people felt the same way.
A big thank you goes out to Isobel Van Dyke, Luna Wang & Eleonora C. Collini who kindly lent us a range of fantastic photos.
Lessons to be learnt – tighten camera straps pre-gig to prevent breakages.
